Warwickshire Seniors Match Report

Worcestershire v Warwickshire

We have finally done it! The Bears have beaten The Pears!

Venue:  Worcester Golf and Country Club          DATE: 8th July 2022

Warwickshire Team:

Martin Fell and Tim Cooley                                       Ken Spencer and Roger Neale

Nev Gardner and Shaun Young                                Tony Allen and Kevin Henderson

Andrew Carman and Peter Gordon                        Andy Sheard and Dylan Ward

No match report has given me so much pleasure in writing, after many years of ‘oh so nearly’s’ Warwickshire Seniors showed tremendous focus and strength of character to deliver a massive away victory over our rivals Worcestershire.

The story of the morning was one of our Team getting used to an unfamiliar course. Worcester Golf and Country Club was presented in fantastic condition, and the very narrow long greens put a premium on accurate approach work. Highlights from the session included a gutsy half in the top match, Martin Fell and Tim Cooley getting up and down on the last to halve the match. Further wins from the ever-consistent pairing of Ken Spencer and Roger Neale and a new pairing of Andy Sheard and Dylan Ward gave us 2.5 points from The Morning Foursomes

Morning Foursomes Result:

Warwickshire Won 2 matches, halved 1 and Lost 3.

Warwickshire 2.5 points – Worcestershire 3.5 points.

So, the size of the task was clear, we needed some ‘big performances’ to give us a chance of getting something positive out of this fixture. To the total credit of Team Warwickshire, the positivity and focus was in abundance and there was no time for reflecting on recent previous encounters.

Martin Fell and Tim Cooley came up against Worcestershire’s top pairing and could not add to our points tally in the first match. Tony Allen and Kevin Henderson started the charge in winning the second game, followed by the dependable Spencer and Neale winning match 3. With our noses slightly in front with 3 matches left out on the course things were getting tight and nervy. Nev Gardner and Shaun Young came mighty close to halving their match but came up short. We were now behind!!!!

NO NEED TO WORRY …… In the cool hands of Andrew Carman and Pete Gordon in match 5, and Andy Sheard and Dylan Ward in match 6, both games ended in wins for Warwickshire which sealed a memorable and emotional win.

Afternoon Fourball Result:

Warwickshire Won 4 matches and Lost 2.                                                                                                             Warwickshire 8 points – Worcestershire 4 points.

The overall result therefore was a Warwickshire win 10.5 points to 7.5 points.

My thanks to Worcester Golf and Country Club for giving us such a great test of golf, together with warm hospitality.

To Andrew Hill, Worcestershire Captain and his Team who gave us a hard fort match and played the game in great spirit.

But I save the biggest thanks for my Team. To watch you play with the determination and focus that you did made me so proud to be your Captain. A magnificent result that we take into our final League Game on the 15th August at Copt Heath v Derbyshire. Please feel free to join us on the day to cheer The Team on.

Rob Soen

Warwickshire Seniors Captain.
