Warwickshire Girls Stableford Series off to a great start!

As is traditional, the first in the Series was played at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club on Sunday 24 April this year. It was a chilly and windy day but with many of the 16 girls wearing ‘navy & yellow’ and their new navy caps courtesy of Lyle & Scott, they attacked the course with enthusiasm! The course was dry and running fast with the greens especially tricky but nevertheless there were many excellent scores.

Our very grateful thanks go to the club who supported the day wonderfully, in particular Jean Williams, Lady Captain, Sue Foster Secretary and Ruth Watson, vice-Captain. In addition, 11 more ladies looked after the girls in the clubhouse and on the course with 4 of these ladies accompanying the groups. Thank you also to Brock Harrison who acted as starter and went out with the final group.

Thanks must also go to Patrick, head professional who generously ran a simulated challenge on the ‘7th hole at Pebble Beach’. Sophie Goonewardane-Brown was the winner at 5’10” from the pin.

The winner of the 18 hole competition for handicaps 0-36.4 and winner of the 9 hole competition for handicaps 36.5-54.0 both receive a Sylvia Evans salver which Sylvia donated some years ago for this particular competition. Unfortunately Sylvia was unable to be with us to present these trophies.

In addition 5 girls playing for the first time in one of the Stableford competitions were presented with the Warwickshire ‘Bear’ brooch. They were Martha Silver, Annie Silver, Bethany Hobbs, Georgina Priestley and Isabella Ryley.

The 18 hole competition was won by Martha Silvers, Stratford-on-Avon GC with a superb 46 points.

The runner up was Ella Tandy, Robin Hood GC with an excellent 41 points.

The 9 hole competition was won by Georgina Priestley, also Stratford-on-Avon GC with 20 points with the runner up Elsie Glover, Kenilworth GC with 17 points.

The winner of the Futures competition for girls without a WHS handicap index who played 6 holes was Erin Thompson, Copt Heath GC with 14 points.
