Hodgkinson and Jones claim the Vice Presidents Bowl

(Pictured L to R: Steve Johnson - West Midlands Captain, tournament winners Mark Hodgkinson & Stuart Jones, Mark Reynolds - WUGC President)

The Warwickshire Union Spring Fourball Betterball tournament otherwise known as the Vice Presidents Bowl was played at West Midlands Golf Club on 26th April.

76 players took on the challenge which includes one off the longest holes in the UK, the par 6 (!) 8th hole which stands at 720 yards off the white tees and the Sawgrass like finish of the 18th hole which includes an island green.

All the players enjoyed some fantastic hospitality and fast greens which is where we give our thanks to Mark Harrhy, Ken Bent, the clubhouse and greenkeeping teams for providing such a great venue for this event both inside and out.

With such a test I was expecting scoring to be little stifled but that was not to be, with 12 two's scored over the whole field and three of them coming from the same pair. All of whom took home vouchers for their efforts.

For the 18 hole team results in third place we had John Cleaver and David Bull from West Midlands & Widney Manor who returned a score of 45 points and just pipped the Welcombe pairing of Mike Hancox and Ian Shephard by having a butterball back nine score.

In second place, and who held the lead for the majority of the day was also a home club pairing of Sunny Kanwal and James Minards with a great score of 47 points. Sunny and James play off 8 and 12 respectively and to achieve their 47 points had played the course with a gross betterball score of 1 over par gross. Well done chaps on what wold normally take home the silverware I'm sure.

But in first place, we had a pairing who both already have their names on the silverware from previous wins some years ago, the Pype Hayes duo of Mark Hodgkinson and Stuart Jones with a cracking 51 points!! They also would have returned a great gross of three over and a gross two to seal the deal on the island green last hole.

Thanks again to West Midlands Golf Club for hosting this event and great to see so many members supporting it.
