FIRST VETS' COMPETITION OF 2022 GETS OFF TO A GREAT START
Robin Hood Golf Club was the venue for the Vets' Betterball Competition 2022, the first time this has been played since 2019! The sun shone, albeit a little chilly at times, the course was in great condition with very fast running, tricky greens and the 132 Vets' who had entered could not wait to get out and play. Everyone turned up and after play in the Clubhouse, there were obviously lots of stories about missed putts, drives that hit a tree or the ditches getting in the way - the noise level and chat was great for this, our first event in our season.
Some excellent scores were posted with several vying to get into the winning positions and it was so good to see so many Senior Vets (over 75's) competing not only for the major prizes but for the new trophies this year, The Yvette Doughty Trophies. Yvette left WVLGA a bequest of £1000 in 2019 and it was decided to have a separate prize in her name for the best Betterball score of two Senior Vets. You can imagine our delight when the winning score was posted by Liz Woolf (our Past President) and Iris McDonagh from Ladbrook Park GC, Yvette's home club. Liz used to visit Yvette in her latter years and pass on all the news from the Association, as she was always interested. Well done to Liz and Iris, especially Liz as this was only her third 18 holes for a couple of years - they won a beautiful engraved vase each.

1st Chris WRIGHT & Hilary SUMMERSGILL (West Midlands GC) - 41 points (on countback of back 9)
2nd Karen McKENNA & Sonja CASTLE-MOTT (Kenilworth GC) - 41 points
3rd Lindsey BROOKS & Barbara JONES (Stratford Oaks GC) - 40 points (on countback of back 10)
4th Claire HOWELLS & Liz BETTS (Moor Hall GC) - 40 points
Front 9 - Suzy GRIFFITHS & Julie WARD (Edgbaston GC) - 21 points
Back 9 - Jane MITCHELL & Gillian SUMMERFIELD (Ladbrook Park GC) - 22 points
The winners collected the Ellie SCOTT Salvers as well as their vouchers.
At the Prize Presentation, WVLGA President, Val Barker thanked the few players and committee members who had stayed and gave a very big thank you to Robin Hood GC for allowing us to play on their beautiful course. The 4 Starters (Margaret Bowes, Denise Boyd, Su Pinner and Mr Chris Jameson) were thanked for giving up their time to make sure we all got off on time and Sue Butler was also thanked for stepping in on behalf of Robin Hood Lady Captain for making sure everything ran smoothly. Final thanks went the Rosemary Cole, Vets' Competition Secretary who had spent the whole day at the club checking in all players and then enteribng scores etc. She and other Committee members did a splendid job making sure everyone was catered for with any queries answered.
