Cave Digs Deep to Win

The 2021 Midland Boys Junior Champion of Champions, played over two rounds of 18 holes, was held on Sunday 19th September at Peterborough Milton Golf Club. The event which see's the ten Midlands Counties that make up the Midland Golf Union, send their County Champions at the three age groups of under 14's, under 16's and under 18's to compete against each other to come up with a Champion of Champions.

Warwickshire's three representatives saw Joshua Gardner from Coventry Golf Club compete in the under 14's, Sam Knowles from Wishaw Golf Club compete in the under 16's and Seb Cave from The Belfry compete in the under 18's. In addition to there being prize winners at the three age levels there was also an overall winner for the lowest 36 hole total on the day. The weather thankfully was not as bad as the forecast predicted and despite steady rain during the morning for about an hour along with a course that, whilst in excellent condition, posed questions for all the Boys with some tricky pin positions, the scoring was perhaps a little higher than expected. Joshua's morning round of 72 was the pick of our Boy's efforts in their opening round and saw him lead his age category by two shots at halfway. Unfortunately he was unable to score as low again after lunch and had to settle for 2nd place after being overhauled by the Lincolnshire champion Jack Emery. Sam admitted that too many bogies had derailed his challenge, but this experience for both him and Joshua will stand them both in good stead for the future.

Seb was a little out of sorts during the morning and with a cold putter his opening round of 76 saw him 5 shots behind Oliver Toyer from St Neots Golf Club at lunchtime. Time spent on the putting green between his rounds saw Seb improve after lunch with a fine round of 70, the highlight of which was an eagle 3 at the par 5 13th hole. His afternoon score was bettered by just one player Jack Roe of Elton Furze Golf Club who scored 69 and meant that their two round total of 146 left them two shots clear of Oliver Pritchett from Northamptonshire alone in third place. The ensuing sudden death play off saw both players par the opening two holes and in deteriorating light both Jack and Seb hit their second shots just through the back of the eighteenth green as they played their third play off hole. Jack putted first and hit his putt some three feet past the hole. Seb putted up to eighteen inches and when Jack missed his return putt, the latter calmly rolled in his par putt for victory.

Seb's successful season continues with yet another trophy to add to the cabinet. His next venture in County colours will see him represent Warwickshire in the England Golf County Finals later this week at Remedy Oak Golf Club in Dorset from 24th to 26th September.

We wish him and his team mates well. Go Bears !!
