1st ALLIANCE OF YEAR GOES TO HENLEY PAIR
Monday November 4th and although the day promised to be fine, underfoot the boggy ground prevailed - the result of all the recent rains! Carrying only was the order of the day at Ladbrook Park and all participants were e-mailed before 8am.
Two teams withdrew, unable to carry, so the tee times had to be jiggled. However, several ladies turned up with trolleys and trolley bags (not so good to carry) resulting in a mad dash of begging & borrowing - but fell short of actual stealing! All was in order when a third team bowed out, unable to carry but having made the journey! So back to odd numbers that resulted in the final pairing becoming a threesome! (6 tee shots, but 3 balls thereafter)
Opportune reminder that this is a winter competition & we need to be mindful of course conditions. These can be found on the Host course website, by ringing the Pro or checking for any email notifications prior to departure from home. More simply, use a ‘carry bag’ on your trolley – just in case! If you are unable to carry, then possibly arrange a potential replacement in advance, particularly if the conditions have recently been poor.
All that being said, once minor frustrations were overcome & bags sorted - a single bag for one or two pairs, or clubs being shared across 2 bags (max 14) for other pairs - all was good humoured, and friendly play took place in good weather! The greens were proving to be tricky and despite being allowed preferred lies in all general areas, it was clearly challenging out on the course.
Henley & Coventry were on tenterhooks in the clubhouse all afternoon and could barely believe it - no other teams had matched them!
Pipped over the back nine were Jenny ARNOLD and Jan WHETSTONE of Coventry. Maggie TAYLOR and Donna CORNELIUS of Henley took first prize - interestingly this same pairing had won the November Alliance in 2018!
Elizabeth EARNSHAW OBE thanked the Host Club and the Ladies Captain, Jean BADMAN, for her assistance throughout the day. She reminded the ladies present of the upcoming Warwickshire Awards Dinner (speak to your own club for details or check the website). The Ball sweep for the County Girls took £37.
