At :   Walsall Golf Club

On : Monday 8th July 2024.    For: Morgan Trophy (Tri-County)

Format:  4 Ball better ball with shots.

Walsall Golf Club gave us a very warm welcome on arrival. Tea and coffee awaiting with Carol Alford the Staffordshire Captain having her lap top at the ready to calculate all the course handicaps and playing handicaps at a touch of a button - I want that program! ……… Although my old financial days got the better of me and I insisted on checking them all manually!  (Well it was a Trophy Competition.)

We were fielding a lot of new blood in this match - feeling very hopeful.

Walsall’s practice green was a bit of challenging surface and I was hoping this was not a sign of things to come. Anyway lets not talk about that.  The course was a relatively short course on the front nine. Fairways were very  narrow in places so accuracy was key. I was fortunate in playing with Glenda Loram from Olton who was able to guide me round - a definite plus.

The team started off well with Gill Somerfield from Ladbroke partnering Louise Smith from Edgbaston to a positive 4 & 2 victory. Followed by our Vice captain Lesley partnering Susan Kosniowski winning their match 2 up.  We went a bit off form in the next match out but got 2 halves with Ali Gledhill Edgbaston and Angela Danby, Whitefields, and Glenda Loram from Olton and myself.

Good time to finish the match I think because then our last 3 pairs came 2nd!

Final match result was 5-3 to Staffordshire who retain the Morgan Trophy. We’ve still got 2nd and 3rd place to play for so lets keep our fingers crossed.

Highlight of the day - the halfway house with delicious home baked cakes provided by Walsall’s Lady Captain.

Thanks go to all the Ladies who played but special thanks to the newbies :

Louise Smith, Susan Kosniowski, Mary Childs, Susie Adams, Julie Skipps and Lynda Blundell, who may have had their arms twisted to buy the kit and therefore may just have to play again.

Also thanks to our President Sue Timberlake who welcomed our team and helped with administration.
