Warwickshire Golf News 2020 - Week 1

Handsworth

Ben Green will be hoping to start 2020 the way he ended the previous year at Handsworth after the two-handicapper birdied the 18th hole to claim the second of back-to-back victories in the two Stablefords either side of Christmas.

Hatchford Brook

Lewis Harris compiled a brilliant nine-hole score of 25 points to win the New Year’s Day Stableford by three from Daniel Smith, with three more high-handicappers Russell Harber, Russell Harber (both 21) and Colin Smith (20) also in good touch.

Countback was required in the other divisions as Mark Baker edged out Paul Busby in the top section, while Paul Simpson beat fellow mid-handicappers Dave Pountney and Stephen Field (all 19).

Pype Hayes

Nick Dymond, Jack Dymond, William Dale and Edward Dale combined perfectly in the first Pype Hayes team event in 2020 as they won the Christmas Texas Scramble with a score of net 54.9. Dean Wright’s team (56.4) were runners-up from Tom Tildesley’s quartet (57.9).

Christine Drayton was successful in the opening Ladies Nine-hole Eclectic competition of the year as she beat Julie Chancellor on countback. Debra Partington led the 18-hole scoring.

Whitefields

Paul Wilson wasted no time in getting his year off to a winning start as the 15-handicapper earned a dominant six-point victory in the Hangover Stableford at Whitefields. Wilson carded nine pars and nine bogeys on New Year’s Day to finish well clear of Ivor Bourne and Gary Burdett (both 36 points).

Carolyn Coxon also enjoyed a comfortable win on the same day as she finished five ahead of Joan Kearney in the Ladies January Stableford.

Windmill Village

Simon Thompson completed Windmill Village’s front nine in gross one-under-par on New Year’s Day as the 16-handicapper won the 15-hole competition with a tally of 40 points. Kevin Arnold was runner-up.

Wishaw

Frankie Meszaros enjoyed the challenge of competing with a smaller set of clubs at Wishaw as he won the New Year’s Day 3 Clubs & Putter event with a total of 43 points. An eagle two on the seventh hole proved crucial for the high-handicapper as he nudged one point ahead of Robert Pratt.

Warwick

Rob Buckingham claimed the last prize of the year at Warwick as he edged out Lee Webb on countback in the Pam Boag Memorial after both players came in with the best nine-hole total of 18 points.
