YOUNG MASTERS IMPRESS AT MARSTON LAKES

Winners Left to Right: Oliver Camargo-Jones (Lakes winner), Archie Williams (Lakes R-up), Alex Hougham (Par 3 winner), Louis Taylor (Lakes Putting winner), Alex Hougham (Par 3 Putting winner)

The Warwickshire Young Masters was held at Marston Lakes Hotel and Golf Club on 8th September.

Marston Lakes is a perfect venue for this tournament as they have the great nine hole Lakes Course and a fantastic 9 hole Par 3 course. These facilities mean we can offer a competition to youngsters with or without a handicap and they can play in the event best suited to them.

Although entries were a little low this year there was certainly no lack of talent - as the scoring showed!

The winner of the Handicap category which was held on the Lakes course was a great score of 29 points over the 9 holes from The Warwickshires Oliver Camargo-Jones. At only 9 years old returning 2 pars and 3 bogeys in his 9 holes was very impressive. Runner-up spot for this category was hotly contested with 3 players  returning scores of 23 points. Losing out on a card play off was Copt Heaths Kamraan Arstu, and Nuneaton Golf Clubs Jake Frearson. Winning the runner-up place was Archie Williams from Shirley Golf Club.

On the Par 3 course there was a similar display of fantastic ball striking and golf being played. The Winner of this event was Alex Hougham who has lessons at The Warwickshire, who returned an amazing 9 hole score of 38 stableford points!! - with a score like that there is no doubt that he will be sure to have a handicap very soon, and when he does it won't be a high one!

In second position in the par 3 was Sam Storer (Walmley), who started out like a steam train, just missing his birdie on the 1st and then parring the 2nd. But couldn't quite maintain it finishing on 33 points.

In addition to the 9 hole events we also had two putting competitions, one for the handicapped players and one for those without handicaps. For the handicap golfers Louis Taylor from Ladbrook Park took the prize with 22 putts, and for the Par 3 players Alex Hougham won with 23 putts.

The players mentioned above may have returned the best scores but a huge round of applause and well done to every single one of the players as everyone played in good spirits and went about their golf very professionally and well mannered throughout.

During the presentation Graham Barton (Union President) and Caroline Lassen (Association President) reminded everyone of the importance of this tournament to both the development of young players and to County Golf. This event is a great stepping stone for Boys and Girls in the game of golf and we hope that the players tell their friends about the event for next year. Some they may even want to move up a rung on the ladder and play in the Girls or Boys County Championship next Summer!

A big thank you to Elizabeth Earnshaw for managing the event, and to Val Stene for her help on check-in and the scoring. Thank you also to the chaperones for helping the players get round the course unscathed and in good time. Lastly a big thank you to Darren Lewis and his team at Marston Lakes Hotel and Golf Club. We are very grateful for the use of your facilities and we very much hope you will have us again next year.
