CARMAN CROWNED SENIORS CHAMPION

The 2018 Warwickshire Seniors Championship was played on 2ndJuly at Walmley Golf Club where a field of over 50 players took on the extremely well presented course with greens running at 9.5 on the stimp whilst also having to deal with the heat and windy conditions.

With many courses in the area suffering from hard, burnt fairways thanks to the warm, dry spell, Walmley managed to produce a course that still looked green, played fair and greens that were still receptive. However, the scoring showed just how tricky the day still was.

Looking at the statistics of the competition there are were 1008 holes played in total by the whole field and only 28 birdies! – to save you getting your calculators out that’s only 2.8%. So, when you compare this with last years event where there were 51 birdies with only 40 players (6.9%) you can see this must have been quite a test!

What’s more there were 350 bogies scored, only 324 pars and 165 holes of double bogey or worse. With these stats, it’s not really a surprise that the CSS for the day went to reductions only.

However, I’m sure you would agree that playing golf in easy conditions all the time isn’t much fun (come on ….. it isn’t!) and a real test is what’s needed from time to time to focus the mind, get the golfing brain going and really grind out a score.

With this challenge in mind all of our Champions are worthy winners and have the pleasure of having their name added to the trophy and a new tale to tell the Grandkids about the time when they “won at Walmley”!

Our overall Champion was Andrew Carman (Coventry) with a gross 77, and has now lifted the trophy 4 times. With his last win being another challenging day at Nuneaton with a gross 78, you can see Andrew performs well under challenging conditions which may see him in good stead when he takes on Woodhall Spa in September in the English Seniors Champion of Champions event.

Our age group Champions were:

55-59: David Calvert (Moor Hall) 78 – winning this and taking the overall runner-up spot on his first outing in the Warwickshire Senior Championship.

60-64: Laurence Greatley (Sutton Coldfield) 80 – taking his first Seniors title and 3rdplace overall.

65-69: Paul Jewell (Ladbrook Park) 81 – who now has his name on this trophy along with winning the 60-64 age group in 2013.

70 & Over: Keith Turton (Harborne) 82 – Keith adds his name for the 4thtime on a Seniors trophy after winning this age group in 2016, the 65-69 age group in 2010 and the overall nett in 2014.

Overall Nett: Malcolm McDermott (Walmley) Nett 73 – winning his first County Seniors trophy on his first attempt in the event.

Very well done to all our Champions!

I close with offering Walmley Golf Club our sincere thanks for hosting a successful Championship, the course was first class with food and service to match. Thank you on behalf of the players, our officials and Board of Directors.
