WARWICKSHIRE SENIORS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS

The annual Seniors Midlands Qualifying was held at Hawkstone Park and Warwickshire competed against the other 9 counties in the Midlands Region over 36 holes of strokeplay.

The event scheduled for an 8.00am start was delayed due to torrential overnight rain and then again in the morning for 30 minutes and then a further 20 minutes making 50 minutes in all.The bunkers were declared as ground under repair and placing was allowed on all fairways.

With each team selecting the best 5 scores from their 6 players in the morning and then again in the afternoon, Warwickshire led by 6 shots at lunch with a total of 378 from Nottinghamshire in second place.

Scoring after lunch was more difficult and as the course dried out the wind also increased in strength. The expected challenge from Nottinghamshire however did not materialise and in the end it was our near neighbours Worcestershire who came closest to us but their effort fell short by 5 shots on the day.

We now progress to the County Finals to be held at Goswick Golf Club at Berwick-upon-Tweed in October, where we will compete against the South West Champions Gloucestershire, the South East Champions Sussex and the winners of the Northern Region after their qualifier is played in September. The matches are played on a round robin basis with 3 foursomes matches in the morning followed by 6 single matches after lunch.

I would like to thank the Warwickshire Board members and the many supporters for their attendance yesterday, to Laurence Greatley as our reserve and Deborah Reynolds for acting as caddies, but to the team, first and foremost for their outstanding effort-Well Done !!
