Chris is England’s champion golf club captain

Warwickshire’s Chris Whitmore is England’s champion golf club captain, comfortably winning the title by three stableford points at Woodhall Spa Gof Club, Lincolnshire.

“It’s fantastic, I’ve never won a national title before,” said Whitmore, who is a member at Marston Lakes, but was the 2000/01 captain at Atherstone Golf Club.

He sealed his win in the final of the English Golf Captains’ tournament series on the par four 18th on the Hotchkin course. He explained: “I play it as a par five, but I managed to sink a 25ft putt for a four. It was very unexpected and it topped everything off. I wasn’t sure what would win today but to get a four for three points on the last was amazing.”

He insists that his win goes against his form. “I haven’t been playing particularly well. I’ve had a bad back and although I’ve recovered over the last couple of months, my golf had a dramatic improvement today!”

Whitmore, who plays off 16, is a regular in the series of England Golf Captains qualifying tournaments, enjoying them both for the competition and for the people he meets.

The runner-up was Simon Geddis (Styal) with 37 points while third place went to Neil Windle (Rotherham) who had 36 points.

The final was played as part of England Golf Week, a five-day festival which celebrates the handicap game.
