Warwickshire County Golf has had a fantastic year of change, modernisation and development. The County tries hard to listen to the wants and needs of its clubs and players and has been actively involved with national initiatives to help this cause.
As a reward for the hard work the county was named Runner-up in the County of the Year category at the recent England Golf Awards held at Lord’s. This is a huge achievement for a relatively small County and solidified Warwickshire’s strength and ability to punch above their weight amongst their peers.
Nick Pink, the Chief Executive of England Golf has this to say regarding the nomination, “Congratulations on becoming one of the two finalists selected from the whole of England for the County of the Year award. Your hard work is valued by everyone at England Golf and golfing the community. We wish you the very best of luck for the future”.
The winning County in this category was Lancashire pipping Warwickshire to the top spot by having an impressive 4.3% increase in Club members during the year, this alone being a great reward for all the initiatives they ran throughout the year.
The inaugural Warwickshire Golf Awards in November last year was certainly a conversation starter and was picked out as a particular success with it being such a big change from the traditional ‘Mens’ Annual County dinner. This event included all partner organisations with a big emphasis on the Clubs and their ‘unsung heros’. The event is being repeated this year and has been booked for 24th November at The Belfry with nominations to open in late Summer and tickets available early Autumn.
Warwickshire was represented on the night by the County Development Group, the Ladies Association and the Warwickshire Union who joined over 400 guests from across the golf industry and heard how the Lancashire county golf organisations work in partnership to grow the game. Click here for video.
Warwickshire Union President, Bob Harrison added; “For Warwickshire to be nominated in the top two Counties in England is a marvellous achievement and a ringing endorsement from England Golf that we as a County, are heading in the right direction.”
As well as the County of the Year, The Awards shone the spotlight on great moments and achievement at all levels of English golf and Lancashire was recognised alongside Olympic champion Justin Rose, Masters champion Danny Willett and Solheim Cup player Charley Hull, as well as other players and heroes from the grass roots game.
