BOYS v NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

This is our first match, all be it a friendly, of the 2016 season against a very strong looking Nottinghamshire team out for revenge following our victory last October against them in the Midland League final.

After all the rain we have had all winter what a pleasant surprise to wake up to a glorious sun shining day. Let’s all hope this is going to be the weather all season.

Our new captain Ryan James, with Young Tom Cleaton, were up against a very strong Nottingham pair Dan O’Loughlin and Jake Benson (Jake having just been selected for the full England boy’s squad). What a great effort by our boys this match on the 18th Tom Chipped in for a solid birdy leaving a 10 footer for the Nott’s pair to win the match 1 up. Unfortunately for us however, they did just that.

Our second pair Luke Turbutt and Luke Challis were also involved in a tight match 1 up with 2 to play. But the Nott’s boys showed their fighting spirit and birdied the last two holes to win 1 up

Match 3 paired James Scagell with Stefan Gnyla together for the first time. It worked well running out winners 2&1.

Another new pairing Josh Davenport & Tom Cleaton also did the business winning there match 3&2.

The news from our last 2 pairings, Dan Pearce & James Bowen followed by young debutant Lewis Watson & Josh Kearns was not so good with our pairings losing 3&2 and 4&2 respectively.

At this point I am going to apologise to our guests from Nottinghamshire. The morning round did not go quite to plan as there were problems with delays on the course which had a knock on effect which resulted in the afternoon single matches not teeing off on time. Then with the time of sunset still being relatively early, it was obvious that we were going to run out of daylight during afternoon matches. So, a decision was made to play to 6 o’clock and whatever the score was at this time that was the result.

Unfortunately, the afternoon singles matches had some further delays meaning in only 3 matches played out to a finish and one of those was a 7&6 defeat for Luke Challis. However, Ryan James made a great comeback in the first match out finishing with 3 birdies out of the last 4 holes to gain a great half. Tom Cleaton played against Jake Benson put up a great fight but finally lost 3&1.

As for the other matches

On the 15th hole Luke Turbutt was 2 down, James Scagell 3 down and Stefan Gnyla 3 up

On the 13th hole Josh Davenport was 1 up Tom Charley 3 up James Bowen Half & Dan Pearce 1 down

On the 10th hole Josh Kearns 2 down and finally making a very impressive debut Lewis Watson 1 down.

This makes the final score 12 - 6 to Nottinghamshire

Although not completely satisfactory as we did not complete our rounds this was a very useful match, and if we are going to retain the Midlands League Title a lot of hard work is required starting on Sunday at Coaching.  Don’t be late boys!
