John Tickell

(John Tickell Pictured Centre)

John Tickell died in hospital on the morning of Christmas Day 2015 aged 86.  He was President of the Warwickshire Union of Golf Clubs from 1997 to 2000, after succeeding Dr. Moss Treacy, who had died in office.  John was only the second person to be Chairman of Warwickshire Junior Golf (1975-1980), following on from Philip Hopkins who was the first Junior Chairman.  John was appointed a Vice-President of the County in 1996.  He became the first Warwickshire man for 35 years to be elected President of the Midland Golf Union (2002-2004) and whilst in that office became very influential in the England Golf Union (as it was then known).

John was a very capable and enthusiastic mid-handicap golfer at Olton Golf Club, where he was a member for over 60 years, and was their Captain in 1965 and their President from 1983-1986.  In later life he was also a member of North Warwickshire Golf Club.

John became a member of the Bears Golfing Society in 1977 and was their longest-serving Secretary from 1984 to 1997.  He had been heavily involved in Warwickshire County Golf and was most innovative during his years as President.  He was very instrumental in producing the Centenary book, including a great deal of research and providing a large number of photographs.

John was a popular, sociable and humorous man, and he leaves a widow, Jessie and a son and two daughters.  His son Robert played County golf for both Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

The funeral mass will be held at the Catholic Church of St. George and St. Teresa in Dorridge, Solihull on Friday 15 January at 11.30 am.  There will be a reception afterwards at the Forest Hotel, Dorridge as this is very close by and frequently holds receptions in conjunction with the Church.  All friends and colleagues are cordially invited to attend both.
