Our first match of the season against the lady VETS was held at Hearsall Golf Club on Sunday 23 May 2021.

Grateful thanks must go to the Club for hosting this event and to the greenkeepers for presenting the course so well after such a week of blustery and wet conditions.  We were warmly welcomed by all staff and members alike and we were very grateful to the Lady Captain, Ann Hawkswood for her attendance at the event.

Before the match started, we were pleased to announce our new Junior Captain, Lilly Phelps to the girls and thanks must go to Veronique Lintin, the 1st Team Captain, who presented Lilly with her Captain’s Badge and the ‘Most Worthy Trophy’ for 2020. Two of our youngest players, aged just 10 years old, were also announced as playing for the County for the first time.  Lilly presented an inspirational response to the girls when she announced that she had once been in their position, very nervous at her first game for County and wishing that one day she might be Team Captain – with dedication it can be achieved.

Special thanks must go to Val Barker, President of the VETS who met the teams at the first tee and announced that this was very much a ‘needle’ match between the two teams as she wished them a good game.  Thank you also to Lesley Duff, our County Secretary, for taking the photographs of the girls as they prepared to tee off.

The blustery and often wet, conditions lasted most of the afternoon, but the match was played in good spirits with smiles and laughter from both girls and ladies as their trolleys were being blown over in the wind! Thank you to Bobbi Waugh, our President, who was at the 9th green to see the girls as they went around the course – with umbrella in hand – her support was gratefully received as she then followed them to the 18th.  The ladies have often spoken about how this is such a lovely, friendly match and so it proved to be once again.  Thank you Lady VETS.

The girls performed amazingly well and with most teams it was a very close game.  However, special mention must go to Katie Drew and Eve Brameld who were 6 up after 9 holes and finished on the 12th hole with 7 up and 6 to play.

Thank you to all girls who took part, they presented themselves exceptionally well and produced our first win of the season for the County.  The support from parents and grandparents is also much needed and gratefully received.
