Nuneaton Golf Club are the winners of the Warwickshire Inter Club League for 2013, beating Walmley Golf Club in the final, which was played on Monday 9th September. Walmley and Nuneaton won through to the final by beating Maxstoke Park GC and Kenilworth GC respectively in the Semis, in August.
After all the sunshine we had experienced this summer, it was quite a shock to wake up to pouring rain, but nontheless the teams of seven players in each teed off from 9.28 a.m. at the Menzies Welcombe Golf & Country Club, who once again had generously offered their course for this important event. The rain kept going until nearly the end of the games and the players and spectators looked quite soaked upon completion of the matches.
Bev FIDDES (8 from Walmley) was first out against Nuneaton County player Rachel RUSTED (4) with Rachel coming out victorious 3 and 2. Next off was Mary RANDON (14 from Walmley) who was drawn against a very in form Marsha BUTTON (7 from Nuneaton), Marsha winning 7 and 6. League Captain from Walmley, Pauline GIBBON (14) was drawn against Di McCORMICK (10 from Nuneaton) and again the match went the way of Nuneaton, with Di winning 4 and 3. Only one more win was needed by Nuneaton for them to win the overall match and this came from Linda POPE (13 from Nuneaton) who won 4 and 3 playing against Margaret RILEY (17 from Walmley).
At this stage, the next three couples were given the option of carrying on or finishing on the hole they were on, but as their matches were won or lost at this stage, this did not cause a problem. Walmley did pull one match back when Pat YOUNG (19 from Walmley) beat Fiona JAY (22 from Nuneaton) 6 and 4. The other 2 matches were won by Nuneation with Janet BURGOYNE (23) beating Jeanette MUMFORD (21) 3 and 2, followed by Joyce AYLIFF 24 beating Sandra EVANS (22) 6 and 5.
Thus, Nuneaton were the winners by a margin of 6 games to 1. After the presentation, the Nuneaton Lady Captain, Liz Upton said " I am so proud of my Team's accomplishment, not only today but throughout the year and especially as it was way back in 1987, when Nuneaton were last in the final, that time only to finish Runners Up"
After lunch, the Presentation took place, firstly to Pauline GIBBON, as Runner Up Team Captain and then to Margaret BLACKETT, non playing League Captain from Nuneation.
County Captain, Bobbi WAUGH thanked Menzies Welcombe G & CC for allowing the County to use their Course and Facilities once again together with all who helped to make the day so successful. A special 'Thank you' was given to Bev BATES who has organised the League Fixtures for the County for the last 2 years.
