DAY 3 - Friday 3rd May - Final

By 1.30 p.m. at the start of the Final, the clouds had gathered in and it became quite chilly but this did not deter anyone.  The match was started by Coventry GC Captain, Dr John CHANDY and quite a few spectators had gathered to watch the main event of the 3 days.

Holes 1 and 2 were halved in Par, and 3 and 4 in 1 over with the first birdee of the afternoon going to Rachel on the 141 yards, 5th hole - 1st blood to Rachel!  Spurred on by this, Melissa replied with a birdee 4 on the 6th, winning the hole.  With holes halved on 7 and 8 in par, Melissa eventually went 1 up after a par on the 9th. This front 9 had produced some excellent driving and steady approach shots from both players, but once again the greens proved a little tricky.

By the 10th Tee the crowd had increased and it was very pleasing to see so many Coventry members as well as Warwickshire Ladies following the finalists.  On 10th hole Rachel's drive went right and she had a difficult shot through the trees, whereas Melissa's drive went long and landed on the fairway. Melissa scored a par 5 to Rachel's 6 and thus went 2 up.

Scoring a par 4 on the 11th, after an excellent drive once again, Melissa won the hole - 3 up.  The next 2 holes were won to pars by Melissa, at this stage being 5 up with 5 to play.  On the next hole again Rachel had a 2nd shot through the trees on the right and after her caddy had shooed the geese away out of her line, hit an excellent shot, eventually taking the hole.  On the next, Rachel hit a fantastic shot on to the long par 3 and won the hole to par - 2 shots turned round.

The 16th hole was pivotel as Rachel once again hit her tee shot right whilst Melissa hit a great shot to middle of the fairway. The second shot of Melissa landed to the right of the green and after an excellent chip close to the pin, was in a winning position.  Rachel, who had reached the green in 4 some way from the pin, conceded the hole and match, which was won 4 and 2.

Melissa NICOL is the Champion for 2013 at the 3rd attempt of playing in the Championship and having been runner-uo in 2012.

DAY 3 - Friday 3rd May - Semi Finals

Current Champion Katrina GANI played Rachel RUSTED in one of the Semi Final matches this morning.  Katrina had a very slow start, losing holes early and by the 7th hole, Rachel was 5 up, having chipped in for a birdee on the 7th.  Holes 8 and 9 were halved, with Katrina winning the 10th to reduce the defecit by one to 4 down.  The next five holes were halved resulting in a win on the 15th for Rachel, 4 and 3.

Rachel was delighted to have reached her 3rd final out of the last 4 years and looked forward to the afternoon final.  Katrina however, was really pleased to have defended her title well, by reaching the semi finals.

The second Semi was with Melissa NICOL paired against host player Charlotte HARTSHORN.  Charlotte started with a birdee on the 1st hole followed by a half on 2nd and a win for Melissa on 3rd - match all square after 3.  Both girls were bunkered on 7th, but Charlotte won the hole with a par and indeed by the 9th had just the edge in the match, being 1 up.

Charlotte halved the 10th and then won the 11th with par.  On 12, Charlotte was in trouble off the Tee and the hole was eventually given to Melissa.  This seemed to spur Melissa on as she won the next three holes.  With halves on holes 16 and 17 with a chip in by Melissa, she won the match 2 and 1.  An excellent match with both players playing superb golf, but with Melissa just having the edge overall.  Melissa was delighted to be in the final, for the second year running

DAY 2 - Thursday 2nd May 2013 - Afternoon rounds - Quarter Finals

After the long round for Sue WESTALL this morning, it was decided to send out the second pairing to lead the afternoon quarter finals.  Thus Charlotte HARTSHORN took on Chaire HOWELLS.  After an extremely close Front 9, Charlotte went up a gear.  During the afternoon round she had birdies on all Par 3's and two on the Par 5's, winning her match eventually by winning the last 4 holes of the round.  She won on the 16th hole by 4 and 2.

Young Melissa NICOL was drawn again the very experienced campaigner, Sue WESTALL.  Melissa got off to a flying start and by the 11th Tee was 5 up.  Unfortunately Sue's Tee shot went left, coming to rest in the middle of a large conifer tree and with a drop necessary, she went on to lose that hole.  Melissa could not be stopped and eventually took the match 7 and 6.

The next match saw Rachel RUSTED up by 5 after 12 holes beating newcomer Kelly KNIGHT on the 15th by 5 and 3.  Afterwards Kelly said she really enjoyed palying in this, her first Championship.

Last match up saw Katrina GANI, 2012 Championship winner drawn against Annabel EDMOND.  Katrina was 5 up after 10 holes then dipped and lost the next 2. but pulled back and won her match on the 14th.

DAY 2 - Thursday 2nd May 2013 - Morning rounds - 1st Round

Once again, the weather was just perfect all day, if not a little warmer than yesterday.  The 16 qualifiers from Day 1 were in the seeded draw with first of the day being Melissa NICOL (Moor Hall) and Carol O'HARE (Shirley).  They set off at 9.00 a.m. but with Melissa in great form, Carol could not hold on and lost the match on the 14th.  Sue WESTALL (Copt Heath) and Mandey NEWEY (Stratford-on-Avon) had a battle royal with the match eventually being won on the 20th with the victor being Sue.

Charlotte HARTSHORN now playing out of Coventry GC had an excellent win over County Captain, Bobbi WAUGH (Moor Hall), winning 6 and 4.  Claire HOWELLS playing Julia BURTON, both from Moor Hall had a good match with Claire eventually being the victor on the 15th hole.

Rachel RUSTED (Nuneaton), complete with injured forefinger just scraped through after a really close match with Gill SAKER from home club Coventry, winning on the 18th. Kelly KNIGHT (Stonebridge) and a newcomer to Warwickshire County Golf played a good round against Sheila CARDWELL (Maxstoke Park) winning 4 and 3.

After a really good round, current holder of the Championship Cup, Katrina GANI (Shirley) beat County 2nd Team Captain, SKYE FURNACE (Moor Hall) on the 15th and finally Annabel EDMOND (Stratford-on-Avon) won her match against Emily COLEMAN (The Warwickshire 3 and 2).

DAY 1 - Wednesday 1st May 2013

Wall to wall sunshine with blue skies all day - this can't possibly be the start of the Warwickshire Ladies County Championship!  Oh but it was and today Wednesday 1st May 2013, the venue was Coventry Golf Club.

On this day there were three Competitions being played, the County Championship qualifying rounds of 36 holes, whereafter the top 16 players with the best 36 hole Gross score qualified into a seeded draw where knockout competition will commence tomorrow morning at 9.00 a.m. (see below)

The Silver Division Medal which included all first round Net scores of those playing in the 36 holes plus additional players who only competed over 18 holes.  Best of the day in Silver was Pat HALE from Edgbaston GC who finished with a magnificent 69 Net.

Finally, the Bronze Division Championship was competed for over 18 holes in a Stableford format, for players with handicaps over 20.  Best scores in Bronze were 32 Points scored by 2 players, with Pam HURLEY (Shirley GC) taking it on countback from Val STENE (Kenilworth GC)

The Course at Coventry had been beautifully prepared by the Greens Staff, especially as this year the weather has proved problematical for getting courses ready for the season, so there was no real reason why the scores were not to be good.  This however was not the case as many players found the course quite challenging and the greens in particular, difficult to read.  All of the competitors though thoroughly enjoyed the day.

To view the final results of the Day:

All prizes are to be presented on Friday 3rd May at approximately 4.30 p.m. when the County Champion will also be known.
