Warwickshire Open and TP Cooke Salver 2023 - Report

Warwickshire Open and TP Cooke Salver 2023

This year’s Warwickshire Open saw 14 of the top local professionals join with 30 of our top amateur golfers to see who could be crowned champion for 2023.  In conjunction with the Warwickshire Open was the TP Cooke Salver, this would be awarded to the best 72 hole aggregate for an amateur over our own Amateur Championship and the Warwickshire Open.

Maxstoke Park was the host venue and the course looked fantastic.  The morning weather was not so friendly however, as constant drizzle and some heavier rain was the theme for the mornings play.

Shooting the low round of the morning was Darryl Gwilliam. His 2 under par 69 would be one clear of the chasing pack, Fin Stokes, Jack Drury, Rob Bardsley and Dan Bardsley all shooting 1 under par 70’s.  Top morning round from the professional ranks came from Sam Dodds with a level par 71.  It was all set for a very close finish to both competitions.

The rain had stopped for the afternoon so better conditions faced the players in the afternoon.

This showed in the early scores being returned for the afternoon round.  Spencer Tanner adding a 2 under par 69 to his morning round of 77 to secure 7th place and be our best placed junior on the day.

6th place would fall to Darryl who added a 75 to his 69, 5th place would be Cam Bridger with his 73, 71 rounds on the day.  Cam is off to New Zealand shortly so this will be the last event he will play with us here in Warwickshire (for now at least).  A massive thank you to Cam for all the support you have given the county teams over the years.

Rhys Lawrence, our reigning amateur champion would finish his afternoon round with a 68 (-3) adding to his 74 in the morning for a level par total on the day and 4th place in the Open.  Rob Bardsley, seemingly ever present at the top of our leaderboards, added a 71 to his morning 70 for a 1 under total for sole 3rd place.  Jack Drury played some fantastic golf all day, but a hugely unlucky break on Maxstoke’s notorious 18th would cost Jack a double bogey 6.  Even with this Jack’s 70 in the afternoon to go with the same score in the morning (-2 total) would seal 2nd spot.

Our 2023 Open Champion would be Fin Stokes, his 3 under par 68 in the afternoon would give him a 4 under total and the title for 2023.

In the Professional competition there would be a 3 way tie for 1st spot.  Ed Clapham, Joe Macilwraith and Sam Dodds all finishing on a +4 total of 146.

To the TP Cooke Salver, the 72 hole aggregate with the Open scores and those from our amateurs on The Earls Course at the Warwickshire in the amateur championships in June.

The top 3 players would all be under par total for their 4 rounds, a fantastic achievement in itself given the setups for these two events.

In 3rd place in the TP Cooke would be Rob Bardsley his 1 under total for the 4 rounds would have been good enough to win this in many years.

In 2nd place was Rhys Lawrence, 2 under par for the 4 rounds and of course winning the Amateur Championship.

Our TP Cooke Salver winner for 2023 would be Jack Drury.  2nd place in both the Amateur Championship and The Warwickshire Open, it was fitting Jack be rewarded for his excellent and super consistent play in both events with this trophy.

A huge thank you to Maxstoke Park Golf Club, the course was setup brilliantly and the welcome received by the staff and members was just fantastic.  Thank you to Luke and Tina for all the help in making the day run smoothly.

Thank you to our volunteers for the day, Alastair Scott as our referee and to Nick Hoare, Mark Reynolds and Gilles Fellingham in heling with starting duties and championship support.
