Boys Matchplay Championship 2023 – Report
The top 8 finishing boys who were available from this years Boy’s championship would battle it out for the 2023 Boys Matchplay title and the R.G Ferry Trophy.
The Quarter Finals:
Alfie Mitchell (Nuneaton) would beat Oliver Clark (Ladbrook Park) 4 & 2
Callum Lee (Moor Hall) would beat Sam Tooth (Moor Hall) 6 & 5
Ben Storer (Moor Hall) would beat Bobby Brittan (Moor Hall) 1up in a very close match.
Joseph Williams (Moor Hall) would beat Lennon O’Neil-Knibbs (Coventry Hearsall) also by a 1 up scoreline.
The Semi Finals:
Alfie and Callum would battle out the first semi final and this would be a low scoring game with both players around par for the front nine hole. Callum would take the initiative around the turn and it was a lead he would not relinquish, running out a 3 and 2 winner.
Ben and Joe would compete in the other semi-final and this too was a high standard. This was close all match and it would be Joe who would win by a 1 up margin.
The Final:
Callum and Joe started the 36 hole final early and had the course to themselves, completing the first 18 holes in under 3 hours. Joe would finish the first 18 strongly, winning 16,17 and the 18th to hold a two up lead over lunch.
The afternoon started where the morning left off, the standard was fantastic and the players traded birdies on the 5th, 6th and 7th as Joe kept himself in front despite Callum’s best efforts. Callum would win the 9th to return the match to all square with 9 to play. Joe hit immediately back on the 10th with a birdie to retake the lead. Callum still playing great golf himself would begin to gain some momentum and would win the 12th, 13th and 14th to surge into a 2 up lead with just 4 holes to play. The 16th would prove to be the last hole of the match, Callum hitting two wonderful shots to the heart of the Par 5 and the birdie would see him win the title 3 and 2.
The RG Ferry Trophy would be Callum’s for 2023.
