Warwickshire Boy’s Championships 2023 – Championship Report

Friday 11th August – Nuneaton Golf Club

A bright but windy day greeted the competitors for the 2023 Warwickshire under 18 Championships.  A first in Warwickshire, the day would be co-hosted with the Ladies Association of Warwickshire who would run the Warwickshire Girls Championship for 2023 at the same time.

The wind combined with the fast greens was making scoring quite difficult, but it was Josh Gardner (Coventry GC) who made it seem very easy with a sublime 2 under par 69 to lead the way by three from Lennon O’Neil-Knibbs (Coventry Hearsall).

Conditions remained similar for the afternoon play.  Fifth place in the event would go to Oliver Camargo-Jones who posted a 36-hole total of 156 (+14). Fourth place would belong to Lennon, who added an 82 to his morning 72 for 154 (+12).  Into the top 3 and in third place was Alfie Mitchell (Nuneaton) who would shoot the joint lowest score of the afternoon (75) for a total of 153 (+11).

Runner up in 2023 would be Ryan Gavin (Coventry) with two 75’s for a 150 (+8).

The winner for 2023 would be Josh Gardner, with an afternoon 79 to hold on and win the title by two shots.

Josh will no represent Warwickshire in the English Junior Champion of Champions Tournament on 17th September at Woodhall Spa Golf Club and the Midland Junior Champion of Champions on 24th September at Trentham Golf Club.

The Elizabeth Earnshaw Trophy was added to this event in 2023, this trophy is awarded to the best Boy/Girl team from a golf club in the Championships.  This was awarded to Coventry Golf Club – represented by Josh and Heather Gilks.

The best nett prize for the day was awarded to Sam Tooth (Moor Hall) for a very impressive level par net for the 36 holes played.

A massive thank you to Nuneaton Golf Club for allowing us to host the Championships, the course was fantastic and the welcome we received from Marc and his team was exceptional.  Nuneaton will be hosting the Midland Brabazon Qualifier on behalf of England Golf in 2024.  Worthy recognition for all the hard work put in.

Thank you to Giles, Lakh and our President Mark for all of the assistance on the course as part of the Championship committee and thank you to Pat Hale and Elizabeth Earnshaw for their work in making this Championship seamlessly integrated with the Girls Championship.
