Warwickshire Seniors second League Match gave us a home fixture against Staffordshire at Maxstoke Park Golf Club. We were looking to take advantage of fielding a number of home club players, and to this point, we welcomed back to the team Tony Allen who declared himself fit to play after a brief illness. Maxstoke Park Green Staff had worked very hard to prepare a course of great quality and in particular presented greens which the players acknowledged as being outstanding.
The morning foursomes are usually a strong suit for The Seniors, and our Team continued to show strength in this department by winning 5 out of 6 matches. A number of the pairings used for this match have been successful in previous matches, so hopefully this is becoming a part of our winning formula.
Morning Foresomes Result:
Warwickshire Won 5 matches and Lost 1.
Warwickshire 5 points – Staffordshire 1 point.
Although we took a large lead into the afternoon session, we knew that Staffordshire, having had a look at the course in the morning foursomes, would come out fighting. In match 1, which was a tight affair in the morning, took on a similar pattern in the afternoon, but Creed and Cooley finally overcame a very strong pairing winning on the 18th green.
Match 2 which featured Dave Mason and Andy Sheard, shook themselves down after a morning defeat to win impressively 3/2 in the afternoon.
Match 3 was also a very close tussle with the lead exchanging hands throughout the afternoon, so a halved match was probably a fair result for both teams, but importantly assured Warwickshire of an overall win.
We then turned to the middle and tail order to determine the size of the win for Team Warwickshire.
Our next two pairings of Gardner / Young and Carman /Gordon, both enjoyed 100% success in our previous match v Shropshire and Herefordshire, so it was no surprise to anyone when both pairings again took maximum points for the day. The Match was completed with a strong performance by Ken Spencer and Roger Neale over coming their opponents in a 4/3 win.
Afternoon Fourball Result:
Warwickshire Won 5 matches, Halved 1 and Lost 0. Warwickshire 11 points – Staffordshire 1 point.
The overall result therefore was a Warwickshire win 16 points to 2 points.
My thanks to Maxstoke Park Golf Club who looked after both teams so well over the course of the day.
The Seniors always get fantastic support from The Board, and having Mark Reynolds and Pete Clarke present at this fixture was a great help to me personally and appreciated greatly by the players.
