OLTON and KENILWORTH MAKE THE LEAGUE FINAL

OLTON Team RUGBY Team
KENILWORTH Team HARBORNE Team

On Monday 14th August the two semi finals took place firstly between Olton GC and Rugby GC played at Kenilworth GC and with the second taking place at Maxstoke Park GC between Kenilworth GC and Harborne GC.

At Kenilworth, Olton won the toss and invited Rugby to Tee off First.  Club President from Kenilworth acted as starter. A little rain to start with but that soon cleared and the  Kenilworth course looked to be in excellent condition.

First match between Abi MORTIMER LANE and Christina KENNEDY with Abi taking an early lead being 2 up after 6 holes and 4 up after 10 eventually winning her game, 6 and 5.

Second match was a much tighter affair with only one hole between Judith PEGLER and Hilary DIXON being all square after 6 and Judith birdiing the 10th to go back to all square. Hilary eventually won on the 17th with a chip in to win the hole and holing a long putt on 18th to win the match 1 up.

The match between league Captain of Rugby Deb HARRAD and Del LAKIN HALL from Olton was another close affair with Deb holding a 1 up lead through 10 holes eventually winning 3 and 1.

Fourth match between Sandra BRAZIER and Karen HEARN was a real battle.  With no shots being given on either side, Sandra soon was 2 up after 6 holes and then 1 up after 10.  Karen fought back to go All Square playing 18th which she managed to win.

League Captain for Olton Wendy McINTYRE was never down in her match against Linda LONG, eventually winning 4 and 2 in the fifth match.

Helen FLEMING and Mary O'NEILL had a good match after Helen being 2 up after 10 Mary fought back to square the match on 18th before winning on the first extra hole.

Hazel OAG won the 7th match 2 up against Annette BUCKNALL, having never been behind.

Well played to both teams for a very close and exciting finish.  County Captain Margaret SHEEPY thanked Kenilworth for hosting the event and wished Olton, Winners by a narrow margin of 4 and 3, best wishes in the final.

The second league semi-final took place at Maxstoke Park GC where both teams were warmly welcomed by the Lady Captain, Barbara Woolley - our thanks go to her and the staff who looked after everyone so well.

The day commenced with a light drizzle, but it did not last and although the sun threatened to break through the clouds all day, it never quite did, albeit the day was warm and pleasant for golf. The course was in good condition and there were no concerns expressed about the speed of the greens - slow or fast!

Sporting their customary bright red, the Kenilworth Ladies won the toss and tee’d off first followed by the Harborne ladies clad in deep lavender. Nerves on the first tee saw the first 6 drives miss the fairway but later pairs - who admittedly had a smaller gallery watching, managed to find the centre of the fairway.

Liz BROWN, Kenilworth Team Captain played Rahella GORDON and it went to the wire. Liz's putt doing a u-turn on the 18th meant Rahella won - 1 up.

Maggie SMITH and Michelle TITLEY had an even even tighter match - continuing on through to the 21st hole where they were advised they could stop, the match having been won by this stage.

The other matches had all been won by Kenilworth.
Teresa WRIGHT beating Debbie NAYLOR 1 up:  -  Alison SEYMOUR MEAD beat Mary FRAISE 5 and 3:  -  Jane ADAMS  beat Kath TERRY 7 and 5:  -  Chris COPPER beat Rose HANCOCK 4 and  3: -  Catherine MIDGLEY beat Pat MELLARD, Harborne Team Captain 5 and 4

The semi final was fought valiantly and in good spirit not forgetting the caddies doing their part in supporting their players both physically and psychologically!

The County President, Caroline Lassen thanked Maxstoke Park for their welcome and the teams for not having to bother us with any rule query - we had sat on tenterhooks beside the mobile, discussing Decisions on the Rules of Golf!

Caroline wished Kenilworth, having won their semi-final 5 1/2 to 1 1/2, luck in the forthcoming final.

Thus the Final of the 2017 Inter Club League will be between Olton GC and Kenilworth GC, this year being played at Handsworth GC on Monday 25th September.  All spectators welcome for this event.
