2nd Team Friendly v Leicestershire

The first 2nd Team friendly of 2017, took place on Sunday 26th March at Harborne Golf Club, versus Leicestershire & Rutland. The Morning Foursomes went in favour of L&R as they took a slender 3-2 lead into lunch.
Warwickshire’s foursomes points came from County Stalwart Steve Creed, and current County Junior Josh Davenport, who both play their golf at Maxstoke Park. They won their match convincingly 5&4. Also recording a full-point were late call-up’s, and Harborne member’s, Steve Keay and Lee Podmore, who also play Bainbridge Shield Foursomes together. Lee dramatically chipping in on the 18th to win their match 1up.  Coventry GC’s Danny Launchbury and Ben Goodison were defeated 4&3, Tom Charley (TheWarwickshire GC) and Olton’s Mike Pell lost their foursomes 3&2, and finally Neville Gardner (Stoneleigh Deer Park) partnered Stratford on Avon’s Morgan Jackson, but were unable to add to Warwickshire’s points tally, losing5&3.

The 10 afternoon singles went resoundingly Warwickshire’s way, despite losing matches 1 (Mike Pell 3&2), Match 2 (Danny Launchbury 2&1), and Match 4(Ben Goodison 5&4), incredibly Warwickshire recorded wins in the other 7 matches! Wins from Tom Charley 5&4, Josh davenport 3&2, Steve Keay3&1, Morgan Jackson 4&3, Lee Podmore 6&5, Steve Creed 2&1, and last but certainly not least Neville Gardner closed out his match on the 16th by holing out a seemingly impossible chip, to win his game 3&2.

Congratulationsto the Team who fought hard all day, and deserved their overall 9-6 victory, embarrassingly my first friendly win in 4 years captaining the 2nd Team, but it was worth the wait!

Special mentions to Josh Davenport who won both his matches on his County Mens debut. To Tom Charley who also made his mens debut, and recorded a great afternoon singles win. And finally to Steve Keay & Lee Podmore for stepping in at very late notice (in Lee’s case about an hour before the match!), and who superbly both went out and won 2 points.

Thanks go to L&R 2nd Team Captain John Fairbrother and his team for a really good match played in great spirit, may I wish them all the best for their upcoming league matches. Thanks of course to Harborne for their support throughout the day and for feeding and watering both teams fantastically.
